Knowing how to respec ability points in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is important. Unless you were chasing the perfect endgame build from the start, chances are you’ve spent ability points on signs, alchemy skills, and combat moves that didn’t prove that useful after a while. Since ability points are scarce and Geralt levels slowly (you’re unlikely to get anywhere near max level in your first playthrough), it’s best to respec from time to time.
Here’s how to respec, and more specifically, where to find a Potion of Clearance in The Witcher 3.
How to respec in The Witcher 3
To respec in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, you need to consume a Potion of Clearance, which resets your ability points (aka the skill points obtained by leveling up and discovering Places of Power). From level 30 onward, there’s a very small chance of finding such a potion in a chest, and you also receive one for free upon starting a New Game Plus.
The best way to obtain a Potion of Clearance, however, is to buy one from a merchant. Beware that the potion costs a whopping 1,000 gold, so you’d better not buy it too often unless Geralt is swimming in money. While shopping, look out for a green bottle with a skull.
Including the Blood and Wine downloadable content, a total of 11 merchants sell Potions of Clearance. You don’t need to visit every location, though, as they’ll restock after roughly three in-game days (you can meditate to speed up time). We’ll show you the most conveniently located merchant with more details below, but here’s a list of all Potion of Clearance merchants:
- Gildorf Shop: In Novigrad, near St. Gregory’s Bridge (see below).
- Keira Metz: After completing her questline, find her at her hut northeast of Midcopse.
- Yolar: A druid in Gedyneith, Ard Skellig. You must complete “Echoes of the Past” first.
- Gremist: Located north of Gedyneith in Ard Skellig. You must complete the “Practicum in Advanced Alchemy” first.
- Beauclair Herbalist (Blood and Wine): Southwest of Harbor Gate.
- Beauclair Perfumery (Blood and Wine): Just southwest of The Gran’s Place. Buy it from the unnamed merchant inside.
- Hortense Vineyard Herbalist (Blood and Wine): Clear the abandoned site south of Beauclair.
- Castel Ravello Herbalist (Blood and Wine): You’ll find this castle in the northwest.
- Chuchote Cave Wine Merchant (Blood and Wine): It’s just south of Castel Ravello.
- Dun Tynne Hillside Wine Merchant (Blood and Wine): Northeast part of the map.
- Coronata Vineyard Herbalist (Blood and Wine): You have to rescue this merchant during the “Wine Wars: Coronata” quest.
Where to get a Potion of Clearance in The Witcher 3
Since you often come through Novigrad anyway, and will unlock this location fairly early, the handiest Potion of Clearance merchant location is the one in the center of this city. Fast-travel to St. Gregory’s Bridge, take the path to the east, walk onto the square, and find the shop on your right-hand side:
