We’re still feeling the loss of Prime Video’s adaptation of Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time fantasy novels. Showrunner Rafe Judkins’ epic, with striking visuals and an amazing cast, was gone far too soon. However, another series based on a fantasy saga is on the way at Amazon’s Prime Video.
Fourth Wing, the first novel in the best-selling The Empyrean romantasy series by Rebecca Yarros, is getting its own TV adaptation. Fourth Wing follows a young woman, Violet Sorrengail, whose life is uprooted by her militant mother, who orders her to join hundreds of other students at the Basgiath War College and become a dragon rider. However, there’s just one catch: if you don’t graduate, you die. And you thought your time at school was rough.
The TV show was reportedly first put into development in October 2023, but has only recently received a series order in May this year during Amazon’s 2026 Upfronts presentation at the Beacon Theatre. Meredith Averill, executive producer for Wednesday season 2, has since been confirmed to be Fourth Wing’s showrunner, working alongside executive producer Michael B. Jordan.
The project will enter development at Amazon MGM Studios and Jordan’s Outlier Society production company. Working alongside Averill and Jordan will be Yarros herself and Westworld’s co-creator Lisa Joy.
“I’m thrilled to be working with this dedicated, experienced team and grateful for their passion for both the books and the readership behind them,” Yarros told Variety.
“Violet’s journey in Fourth Wing has sparked a global phenomenon, captivating millions of readers and building an intensely passionate fanbase around its world, characters, and emotional stakes,” said Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios. “Rebecca Yarros’ brilliant series is one of the most anticipated adaptations in the world, and with Meredith and our valued partners at Kilter, Outlier, and Premeditated, we’re bringing it to life in a way that honors what fans love about the story.”
No further details have been revealed about the Fourth Wing adaptation and its debut. While this show will undoubtedly have a very different feeling from The Wheel of Time, fantasy fans still have something new to look forward to, especially those who aren’t too pleased with the controversial upcoming multiple projects the Wheel of Time franchise has on offer.
