We’ve learned that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has officially wrapped filming. The X post confirming this also reaffirmed that an important series villain will have a major role in the fourth movie.
Spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic Heroes follow!
In the post-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the titular character is attacked by Metal Sonic and a group of other robotic Sonic clones, only to be saved by Amy Rose. It was quite the cliffhanger, but it wasn’t completely known how much the next film would follow up on this character’s debut. Director Jeff Fowler posted on X on May 15 to confirm filming for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 had concluded, and the picture he shared showed him sitting next to a model of Metal Sonic.
If you were worried that Metal Sonic would just be glossed over as the focus of a flashy post-credit scene, don’t be. Fowler followed through on a previous statement to Polygon that said, “We never put these characters in lightly — it’s always because we think they’re going to bring something interesting and new to the story.”
We still don’t know who will be voicing Metal Sonic, even though Kristen Bell has been confirmed to voice Amy. Regardless, I’m happy that it was reaffirmed that Metal Sonic will show up again in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 because he’s one of my favorite villains in the franchise.
The clone character first appeared in Sonic CD in 1993. In that game, Metal Sonic was created by Dr. Eggman to kidnap Amy, kicking off the game’s time-traveling adventure. Since then, Metal Sonic has appeared in many other games and has become a more independent villain. They are the final boss of Sonic Heroes, where they transform into Neo Metal Sonic to fight the player. I have a lot of nostalgia for that particular Sonic game, so I’d love to see Neo Metal Sonic to be the endgame of the next Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
We’ll have to wait and see whether Sonic the Hedgehog 4‘s plot more closely follows Sonic CD or Sonic Heroes, as both approaches are possible withMetal Sonic as a major character. It’ll be about ten more months until we find out, as Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will arrive in theaters on March 19, 2027.
