Things like time played, Metacritic score, and even game type will affect how Game Quest approaches the player
Steam users love to joke about the size of their backlog, but that’s probably only because their collection has never come after them. In Game Quest: The Backlog Battler, your primary opponent is your Steam library. Somehow, that’s not even the best part.
Nic Taylor, the developer behind Game Quest, is quite clever. The specific games that are hostile toward you are the ones in your library that you’ve played the least. These games will inflict damage based on how much you paid for them originally. Helpfully, each floppy disk-style enemy representing the game will mock you with said price on its front label. The games you’ve never played? Those are immortal. Uh, good luck.
It’s not all bad. Game Quest takes note of whatever titles you play the most and turns those into your allies. If you’re feeling bold, you can also take on the backlog of your Steam friends instead.
There are different enemy types here, with highly rated games on Metacritic appearing as flying monsters. Games you’ve played for less than two hours will attack you in waves. Even DLC that you own will square up against you!
There’s a demo on Steam that anyone can play, and Taylor hopes to bring it to Early Access sometime in 2026. Though the game appears simple, the developer still has some kinks to work out. Game Quest‘s Steam forums currently have a discussion titled “Us Degenerate gamers who have 1500+ games” where users with an ungodly number of games are commiserating about slow load times. I’m guessing that Game Quest is completely unplayable for someone like SonixLegend, the notorious Steam user known for owning over 40,000 games. But if Taylor can get it to work, the leader board for that Steam library is about to be lit.
But if this concept seems too overwhelming, the Steam game where you organize your library might be more your speed.
