Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen is a sprawling battle shōnen. While the acclaimed manga ended on a semi-satisfying note, Akutami’s dark fantasy world is so rife with potential that it undoubtedly had more stories to offer. Enter Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, the well-received spin-off getting its third and final volume on May 1. In commemoration of this milestone, animation studio MAPPA (which produced the first three seasons of the anime) has released a special promo for the final volume.
The official Jujutsu Kaisen X/Twitter account shared this exciting new promo, which has also been uploaded to Shonen Jump’s YouTube channel. The animation is expectedly beautiful and fluid, bringing Akutami’s detail-obsessive art in Modulo to life. Shun Miyagawa (who previously worked on Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc) directed and storyboarded the promo, with Sota Yamazaki (Weathering With You) serving as chief animation director. You can check it out below, but beware of manga spoilers if you don’t want your Modulo experience to be ruined.
Modulo takes place 68 years after the events of Jujutsu Kaisen. The fundamental laws that governed jujutsu society have changed over time, and the Golden Age of sorcery has already come and gone. Technology has taken a more active role in sorcery, marking a shift away from conservative attitudes. Although traditional cursed spirits don’t exist anymore, this world houses the Simurians, an alien race that can generate their own form of cursed energy.
That said, can Simurians co-exist with the new generation of jujutsu sorcerers? And where does series protagonist Yuji Itadori stand in the grand scheme of things? Modulo widens the ambit of Akutami’s engrossing world and offers a rare chance to tell a new, yet familiar story that centers on fresh themes and challenges.
Although this video is a promotional tie-in for the final Modulo volume, it is also a litmus test for a possible anime adaptation in the near future. The Jujutsu Kaisen anime is far from over, having recently wrapped up Part 1 of the Culling Game arc in its third season, with a fourth installment on the way. Although a Modulo adaptation isn’t a given, MAPPA is the perfect candidate to continue its commendable artistic approach to adapting Akutami’s dense source material. Based on the brief glimpse so far, a potential Modulo anime can balance depth and spectacle just like Jujutsu Kaisen has been doing so far.
While we wait with bated breath, there’s ample time to indulge in the complexity of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, which features some of Akutami’s strongest writing in the series.
