The next Batman game is almost here as Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will be released in just a couple of weeks on May 22. Early previews of the open-world game are positive. After playing for several hours, we came away impressed with its scope and how it deftly combines the humor of other Lego games with gameplay systems borrowed from the Batman: Arkham series.
As preview write-ups and footage make the rounds on the internet, Batman fans are noticing more and more Easter eggs spread across Lego Gotham. Here are all the ones we and fans online have spotted in Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight so far.
Batman: The Animated Series opening sequence recreated
Batman: The Animated Series is a seminal take on the character for Bat-fans. It redefined characters like Mr. Freeze while introducing new ones that would go on to carve out their own place in Bat-canon, like Harley Quinn. Its opening sequence is iconic, and that beloved intro has been recreated and parodied in Legacy of the Dark Knight.
Speaking of Batman: The Animated Series…
A tribute to Kevin Conroy
For ’90s kids, Kevin Conroy is the Batman; we hear his voice when we read Batman comics. He got his start voicing The Dark Knight on The Animated Series and continued voicing the character throughout future shows, animated movies, and games, like the Batman: Arkham titles. He died in 2022 at age 66 from intestinal cancer.
Legacy of the Dark Knight honors Conroy’s legacy with an Easter egg. Fans have spotted an in-game billboard for a radio program called “After Hours with Conroy,” with its tagline reading “The Voice of Gotham’s Night.”
Michael Caine’s typo
In 2024, Michael Caine, who starred as Alfred in Christopher Nolan’s Batman film trilogy, tweeted out a quote from the first film, Batman Begins. His tweet contained a typo as he labeled the film “Batman Begin,” and a meme was born. Developer TT Games has Legacy of the Dark Knight‘s Alfred deliver that quote, complete with the hilarious (mis)attribution.
“I simply cannot sanction any more of your buffoonery!”
At one point in Legacy of the Dark Knight, Batman and Robin fight a bunch of Two-Face’s goons at a circus. “You fools haven’t beaten them yet?” Two-Face snarls. “I simply cannot sanction any more of your buffoonery!” This is a reference to something Tommy Lee Jones actually said to Jim Carrey. The pair starred together in 1995’s Batman Forever as Two-Face and The Riddler, respectively.
During an interview with Norm MacDonald several years ago, Carrey recounted a story of where he ran into Jones at a restaurant, while they were still filming Batman Forever, “and the blood just drained from his face,” Carrey said. According to him, Jones told him that he hated his costar and that Jones said, “I simply cannot sanction any more of your buffoonery.”
Seal’s “Kiss from a Rose”
Legacy of the Dark Knight‘s launch trailer uses Seal’s “Kiss from a Rose” over scenes from the game, like its Arkham-style combat and a shot of the Joker (clad in a nurse’s uniform) blowing up a hospital. While an odd song choice at first blush, it’s actually a direct reference to Batman Forever. Seal’s Grammy Award-winning hit was included on the film’s soundtrack, and director Joel Schumacher even directed a music video to go along with it, which featured clips from the film.
Surfing Joker
In 2023, an X user pointed out that a flooded Gotham in Matt Reeves’ The Batman would give DC “the perfect opportunity to introduce a certain aquatic villain,” to which another user replied, “Surfing Joker.” That post may or may not be referenced in Legacy of the Dark Knight as one clip on X showed that if Batman hops on the water sprouting up out of a busted fire hydrant, he’ll whip out a surfboard.
New Adventures of Scott Snyder
Scott Snyder is a renowned comics writer known for his work on Batman, particularly the New 52 relaunch and the currently ongoing Absolute Batman series. He introduced the Court of Owls to Batman canon and is continually reinterpreting Batman characters in original ways in the Absolute series. Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight includes a shoutout to him in the form of a banner on the outside of the Gotham Public Library advertising the New Adventures of Scott Snyder.
Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will be released on May 22 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. Deluxe edition owners will be able to play the game early starting May 19. The Nintendo Switch 2 version is still without a release date.
