There’s no life without water in Subnautica 2, so if you haven’t found some yet, make it your top priority before the thirst meter runs dry. Of course, drinking seawater is not an option, but there’s a handy de facto “filter” system that will fix your hydration needs, though it is a bit sluggish.
Here’s where to find water slugs and craft water bottles in Subnautica 2.
[Ed. note: Before you dive in, be sure to open the character menu and enable all landmark signals. This will make it easier to spot the locations mentioned in this guide.]
How to get water in Subnautica 2
If you play Subnautica 2 in survival mode rather than creative mode, you have to mind the thirst meter. That’s the blue circle in the bottom left corner of the screen; if it runs out, you will die of thirst.
To get water in Subnautica 2, you must collect water slugs. They look like small, transparent sea sponges with a bright blue-and-pink glow. Dive down and look for the short, yellow anemone fields — there are many such fields in the area directly below the Lifepod. You will always find plenty of water slugs here, though they may be difficult to spot at first.
Although you can consume a water slug raw, this will only restore 15 water and reduce food points by five. Since you won’t be able to digest alien food at the start of a new Subnautica 2 game, it’s best not to reduce your hunger meter any more than absolutely necessary. So, instead of slurping them on the spot, bring the water slugs to the Fabricator in the Lifepod and craft water bottles. One slug makes one full bottle.
Water bottles restore 40 thirst points, which is far better than a raw water slug’s 15 points. Be sure to bring a few spare water bottles with you on your Subnautica 2 expeditions!
