To find gold in Subnautica 2, you must venture deep into the lava realm — but not without proper preparation, of course. To get your hands on this shiny yellow crafting resource, you need the right tools, enough oxygen, and a genetic adaptation to keep you from boiling up.
Here’s where to find gold in Subnautica 2.
[Ed. note: Before you dive in, be sure to open the character menu and enable all landmark signals. This will make it easier to spot the locations mentioned in this guide.]
Where to find gold in Subnautica 2
In Subnautica 2, gold is only found in the lava region, so you must obtain the heat tolerance adaptation to get it. To unlock heat tolerance, keep clearing new signals by interacting with blackboxes. Eventually, you’ll get a signal from the Wander Blackbox, along with the task to craft a sonic resonator and cure the large pink “Angel Comb” flower. Once you’ve done that, place your hand on the Angel Comb to receive the heat tolerance adaptation. This is the third adaptation you’ll receive, following pressure tolerance and digestion.
Starting from the Lifepod, swim east-southeast. After about 250 meters, you should reach the lava region (keep an eye out for fiery sparks). You can also swim toward Chap’s Blackbox first, then go north-northeast from there.
As soon as you see lava corals like the ones in this picture, gold deposits should be nearby. They typically spawn on the seabed, rock walls, and the large red coral structures (the one spouting fire).
You can use your newfound gold to make thermal plants and advanced wiring kits (which, in turn, is needed to craft dedicated cores and more advanced submarines). Place three pieces of gold in the processor to craft one gold ingot.
The best gold farming location in Subnautica 2
One of the lava corals is not like the others… Because it’s absolutely laden with gold ore veins. This large, almost spider-like coral is the last in a row of three — if you continue east from the direction of the Lifepod, you will find it. It’s right above the Cicada Wreck.
Be sure to bring enough water bottles and an air tank to explore this area. Some distraction flares to fend off aggressive fish will also be helpful. As with previous ores in Subnautica 2, you’ll need the sonic resonator to break the largest gold deposits (yields five gold), but you can collect the smaller pieces with your bare hands. This one coral alone should get you at least 40 gold. While you’re there, you may grab some sulfur, too.
If you’re starting out in Subnautica 2, we have a plethora of guides to help you navigate the deep blue sea. Our Subnautica 2 beginner’s guide will set you off in the right direction and our base building tips will assist in planning out your sprawling base. Don’t forget to stock up on food and water, too. (And if you want to get fancy with your food, you’ll want salt!)
If you need help finding materials, we explain how to get the sonic resonator, which you’ll want to mine tons of materials. We have guides on where to find these resources, like lead, sulfur, copper, quartz, and gold.
