Though no new mainline Pokémon game has been released this year, 2026 has nonetheless been a huge one for the franchise and its fans. Pokémon celebrated its 30th birthday in February, a week before the Dragon Quest Builders-like spinoff Pokémon Pokopia was released. As part of the 30th anniversary celebrations, two classic games were ported over to Switch: Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, originally released on the Game Boy Advance in 2004.
On Friday, Nintendo shared its financial results for its fiscal year that just ended, which provided insight into how well those games have sold in the short time they’ve been out. Turns out people still love playing Pokémon games, old and new! Who would’ve guessed? Pokopia, which was immediately one of the Switch 2’s best-selling titles, sold over 4 million units in its first five weeks on sale.
Pokémon Pokopia‘s sales were matched by Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen in essentially the same time period. (They launched on Switch a week before Pokopia was released.) The Switch ports of the GBA games have also sold over 4 million copies, proving that Pokémon fans are a nostalgic bunch.
Of course, the figures aren’t perfect one-to-one comparisons. The original Switch has sold upward of 155 million units, while the Switch 2 is just shy of 20 million units sold, so there were fewer people who could purchase Pokopia in the first place. The classic ports are also $19.99 — a more palatable price than the $69.99 price for Pokopia. Still, people love their classic Pokémon adventures, and over 4 million trainers are enjoying the remakes this year.
As the king of Pokémon Joe Merrick pointed out on X, the additional Switch sales of FireRed and LeafGreen have pushed those games’ cumulative sales to 16 million copies. They’ve now butted into the top 10 list of Pokémon game sales. As Pokémon Diamond and Pearl are in fifth place with 17.67 million copies sold, it’s not unreasonable to think that FireRed and LeafGreen might find themselves in the top five sooner rather than later.

The latest mainline game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, is up to 12.79 million copies sold, with 8.85 million on the original Switch and 3.94 million on Switch 2. As Merrick points out in a reply on X, Legends: Z-A‘s sales are about on par so far with Legends: Arceus, which sits at 15 million copies sold to date.
In addition to sharing its financial results, Nintendo also announced the price of the Switch 2 will increase later this year to $499.99 in the United States. The Switch 2 launched last June at $449.99 and the now-discontinued Mario Kart World bundle was $499.99.
